MandoSimean as a website was created for the purpose of exploring and sharing the mandolin’s potential. For tutorials, we have a a set of web pages, printable PDFs, music charts and more, all full of information intended to help all mandolin players. Some pages are very basic and others are more advanced. None are intended to be the definitive, end-all information source. Rather these should leave the path open for further exploration and we try to design our tutorial just that way. We believe we can’t include it all and think it is futile to try. But we do want to offer everything we can. Hopefully, you will find a lot to help you expand your own awareness and abilities.
In keeping with that philosophy, most of the material here is intentionally open ended. For example, rather than listing page after page of the same chord shape on different frets and labeling them A7, B7, C7, etc., etc., you fill find a chord shape with a label Dominant 7 and each dot on the grid is numbered according to its relationship to the chord (e.g. 1 is the root, 3 is the third, etc.) This means the reader must understand the function of the chord member and therefore will be able to implement a chord shape anywhere on the neck. It may seem like a little work on the learning end while at the same time, it saves memorization work and means that our chord guide books (when printed out) can be left open at one page as a handy guide for the majority of chords a player will need to reference.
In our tutorials, we will explore the functionality of the material and present it in a practical manner so that the theory behind what is on a page enables the player to play….that’s the whole point
